About the Artist

Ros Rowell is a well established Highland artist who has been living and working in the Stratherrick area, South Loch Ness, in the central Highlands of Scotland since the early 1980s. She lives and works on a small croft in Torness, half an hour’s drive from the centre of Inverness. Her Studio and Gallery is open throughout the year and she runs a comprehensive range of Art Courses, Workshops and Classes as well as displaying and selling work at the Studio.
She is expert in painting loose atmospheric paintings, both traditional and contemporary and has exhibited widely in Galleries in Scotland and in London. Currently much of her work is contemporary watercolour and work in mixed media and acrylic inks. She has many years teaching and painting experience and works very spontaneously using "wet-in wet" watercolour method, much of the time, making full use of the unpredictable nature of the medium. Her characteristic trade-mark is that of the very atmospheric highland skies which appear in much of her work.
Although not art school trained Ros is a trained scientist, with a science degree and a science doctorate, teacher training, and many years teaching and tutoring experience. This is to her advantage as having studied art as an individual, she has a fresh objective eye, and with her scientific training is well able to analyse materials and method, making her an expert in the handling of many varied art media. As such she is very able in the running of exciting dynamic workshops and courses. She has teaching and tutoring experience from primary level to adults, and also with people with special needs, having run painting workshops with people with acquired brain injury. She is able to keep a small group of people happy and productive, creating art, and is able to bring out the best in them.
The Highlandart Studio is situated in magnificent scenery with wonderful views and Ros makes full use of this both in her paintings and in her teaching. Her other enthusiasms include horticulture and traditional music and her family, and these influences creep into her work as well as into her teaching! Mottos that inspire Ros are that "Art is an act of creation, not of imitation", and that "Creativity is born of adversity". A visit to her Studio or to this web-site should hopefully inspire and enthuse visitors and encourage a love of the Scottish landscape and environment and art.
