Painting tips

Having learnt how to paint in watercolour by applying "scientific method" to controlling paint - as well as by "trial and error"! - I'll post up something new every week, maybe to inspire and encourage anyone to get painting.

Dos and Don'ts of Watercolour Painting

    DO
Use good quality watercolour paper, paints and brushes. Practising with cheap materials is not easy, and is false economy.

Use appropriate paper- rough or smooth, thick or thin, large or small, rectangular or square etc. Cut your paper to fit mounts and frames.

Tape your paper to a small board or stiff card, if using lots of water, to stop it buckling.

Use thicker paper for wet-in wet painting or larger pieces.

    DON'T
Paint on paper that is too thin for the amount of water you are using as it will buckle unless you “stretch”it first by taping it, wetting it and allowing it to dry- a bit fiddly- use thicker paper instead.
