Painting tips

Having learnt how to paint in watercolour by applying "scientific method" to controlling paint - as well as by "trial and error"! - I'll post up something new every week, maybe to inspire and encourage anyone to get painting.

    Wet -in Wet painting

    Preparation
    1. Tape your paper down.Use thick enough paper for the proposed final size.Don't use cartridge paper - it will "buckle" unless you stretch it first.
2.Do any drawing you need and plan ahead where the light, medium and dark tones are going to go- this is very important for skies.
    3. If you need to mask an object such as a building or the edge of the hills do it first and allow to dry. This is then painted around or over. Once the wet-in-wet area is dry the dried masking fluid is removed and the masked area can be painted.
    Paint
    4. Before you wet your paper mix a good quantity of paint in a strong enough tone.Paint dries lighter than you think.
    5. Use an appropriate brush for the size of your paper and wet the paper evenly.
A soft “mop” brush is very good for larger paper sizes.
